About Chief Judge Stephen J. Murphy, III

Appointed to the federal bench in 2008, Chief Judge Murphy brings decades of dedicated public service and distinguished legal experience to his leadership of the Eastern District. Prior to his judicial appointment, he served as the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, and as an attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. Known for his deep commitment to the rule of law, court efficiency, and the professional development of the federal bar, Chief Judge Murphy offers invaluable perspective on the bench-and-bar partnership that defines our legal community.
